In addition to the metal detector, the pointer or pinpointer is the faithful companion of each detectorist. If a signal is found with the metal detector, it is dug and the pointer is used to determine the exact position of the discovery. The pointer beep becomes faster and faster as the pointer tip moves closer to the metal object. Using a pointer saves time and energy when digging.
